GO! GO! GO! – Oveido to Grado
SET!!!
Today was amazing… Mike got some work done again today with his project here this morning.. Has more meetings later: first phase finished! By afternoon we headed to a festival and then on for a truly unforgettable afternoon with family and friends in the mountains surrounding oviedo. The meal was traditional foods of bean soups, vegetable stew, homemade breads, goat( yes! And it was amazing!) beef, potatoes, rice pudding, various pastries, and local wines. The setting was surreal and the Spanish chatter and interpretations abundant! What an amazing send off for our journey! Thank you! We got back in the city in time to have our pilgrim credentials stamped at the cathedral so we start with a blessing in the morning and begin walking. First destination.., Grado… Approx 18 miles!
READY!
We woke up in our sweet little apartment in oviedo to the sounds of the market … We grabbed clothes and headed over to buy fresh food for breakfast! Our charades and pitiful attempts at Spanish provided much entertainment … We knew most everyone working including the owner when we left! We even made a new Facebook friend 😉 after a wonderful brunch of fresh eggs, goat cheese, pears, and bread… It was off to see the city, visit the cathedral, and take care of a bit of business before our hike begins.
Home for a quick siesta and about to head out to find tapas and try the famous cider. One more day in the city and then we start….
Planes, Trains, & Automobils
Much of my anxiety about this adventurer has been about logistics of traveling to a country where I speak little of the language sand needing to navigate to get to our starting point in oviedo Spain. Here are a few things I wish I had known…
*it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to find the Informacion desk directly as you exit the runway into the terminal in Madrid. There are numerous people that speak English to help with whatever you need related to your travelNo welcome surprise!Â
*Contray to what biome insatire reported, the ALSA bus from austurias airport to Spain does not have a teminal IN the airport. There actually is no terminal. You just walk out of the airport, to the right, and the is a bus stop. The bus with oviedo written on the front will pull up and you get your ticket as you step on 7.50€
We Have Arrived!
Wow! It has been an adventure all it’s own just getting to Spain. We were delayed due to weather in Dallas so held over a night, rescheduled to Madrid, and held over a second night. Good thing we are not on a tight schedule! The airline put us up in a great place so it couldn’t have worked out better. We are all settled into our apartment next to the market in the square and we have already visited a local bakery for fresh meat breads and desserts for dinner!
….And We Are Off!!!
One Day And Counting!

We are full of anticipation, but no time to take a breath today. We are wrapping up details.., Money… Confirmations… Medication.., Travel Insurance… Pet Care… New music on my ipod ; ) Whew! We are gonna need this little angel to watch over us as we begin our journey. We are so looking forward to the time away together sharing this adventure.
